Chinese President Xi Jinping is beginning a major state visit to the United States, with meetings with President Donald Trump expected to cover some of the most sensitive issues in US–China relations.
The visit is scheduled for 23–25 September and includes formal events at the White House, as both governments seek to manage tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Trade, technology and artificial intelligence are among the principal issues surrounding the talks.
The Role of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly important part of the bilateral relationship. Preparatory talks between US and Chinese officials included a US proposal for a bilateral mechanism to notify each side about significant AI safety incidents.
Artificial intelligence is the intelligence of machines or software, as opposed to the intelligence of human beings or animals.
At the same time, the two countries remain competitors in advanced semiconductors, technological infrastructure and the development of increasingly separate AI supply chains.
A semiconductor is a material which has an electrical conductivity value falling between that of a conductor and an insulator, crucial for modern electronics.
Trade, Taiwan and Regional Security
The summit is also expected to address trade imbalances, critical minerals, Taiwan and wider regional security. Ahead of the meeting, US officials reiterated their support for stability across the Taiwan Strait, while American allies in Asia are watching closely for any shift in Washington’s approach towards Beijing.
The significance of the talks therefore extends beyond bilateral trade, with potential implications for global technology policy, supply chains and the broader strategic relationship between the United States and China.
