SAUDI ARABIA: MISSILE THREATS

RIYADH / BRUSSELS — 16 October 2026. Saudi Arabia is facing a rapidly deteriorating security situation following a series of missile and drone attacks that have heightened regional tensions, disrupted international transportation, and raised concerns about the stability of the Middle East. The latest incidents include the interception of a cruise missile over the Medina region, one of Islam's most sacred areas, and the destruction of an unmanned aerial vehicle over the Kingdom's oil-rich Eastern Province.

The escalating crisis has already produced significant international consequences, including the postponement of a high-level summit between the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), originally scheduled for 24 October in Riyadh. The developments demonstrate how regional military confrontation is increasingly affecting international diplomacy, global commerce, and energy security.

Trump's Russian Diesel Deal

On October 9, 2026, US President Donald Trump announced what he described as a highly successful conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Trump's announcement, Russia agreed to immediately supply more than 300,000 metric tonnes of diesel fuel to American and international markets, followed by another 500,000 tonnes in November. An additional three million tonnes could reportedly become available within a short period, depending on the condition of Russia's refineries.

The announcement was presented as a major step towards reducing energy prices, which have risen sharply amid disruptions to international oil supplies. The associated discussions about relaxing restrictions on Russian petroleum exports also raised important questions about Washington's wider energy and geopolitical strategy.

But the central economic question is not whether Russia can export several hundred thousand tonnes of diesel.
