The accord gives Washington broader access for defence activity in strategically significant parts of the island, as Arctic security becomes a more prominent priority for both the United States and its NATO partners.
The agreement follows months of negotiations about Greenland’s role in regional defence.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, holding significant strategic importance.
Danish officials have emphasised that the arrangement does not transfer sovereignty to the United States, presenting it instead as part of a wider NATO responsibility for Arctic security.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is an intergovernmental military alliance of North American and European countries, established to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means.
Reuters reported that the new framework could provide US access to additional locations at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, adding to the existing American presence at Pituffik Space Base.
The accord comes as the Arctic grows in strategic importance because of military considerations, critical minerals, changing shipping possibilities and the effects of melting ice.
Washington and its allies increasingly view the region within a broader framework of strategic competition involving Russia and China, making Greenland a more important element in long-term Arctic and North Atlantic security planning.
