Explosions were heard across the Saudi capital on 8 October, including a major blast at Riyadh’s international airport that disrupted flights and prompted passengers to evacuate. Smoke was subsequently reported rising from a stationary aircraft, believed to have been empty at the time. Saudi authorities had not immediately issued a complete official account of the incident.
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement said it had launched a ballistic missile at Riyadh airport. The group also repeated its threat to force the closure of Saudi airspace after Saudi Arabia backed internationally recognised Yemeni government forces in the renewed conflict. Offices in Riyadh reportedly instructed some employees to work from home as security concerns increased.
