Canada at Europe’s Door: What “Associate EU Membership” Could Mean

BRUSSELS / STRASBOURG — A proposal that would have sounded almost impossible only a few years ago has suddenly become one of the most consequential political stories in transatlantic relations: Canada could become the European Union’s first-ever “associate member.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen publicly opened that door on 16 September during her State of the Union address in Strasbourg, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in attendance. She proposed moving beyond the existing Canada–EU trade relationship towards an “Alliance for the Future” and said she wanted to work with Ottawa on making Canada the EU’s first associate member.

Congress Clears the Graham Sanctions Bill: What the Landmark Russia and Iran Measure Actually Means

WASHINGTON, September 17, 2026 — The United States Congress has completed passage of one of its most consequential Russia sanctions packages in years, sending the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 to President Donald Trump.

There is an important correction to some of the headlines circulating on September 17: the Senate did not pass the bill today. The Senate approved it on August 7, 2026, by an unusually large bipartisan margin of 86–11, with three senators not voting. The decisive final congressional step came on September 16, when the House of Representatives voted 262–159 to accept the Senate amendments. Twelve House members did not vote.

A revolution in education begins with a change in its intended outcome: from predominantly preparing individuals to perform functions within systems that have already been created, to developing their ability to create new economic systems themselves.

Modern mass public education took shape in Europe during the nineteenth century under the influence of state-building, industrialisation and democratisation. Industrialisation, in particular, created systematic demand for literacy, professional skills and the technological competence of the workforce. For its time, the standardised school successfully performed a strategic function: it prepared people to enter already existing industrial, administrative and professional systems. Its typical outcome was a trained employee — from a manual worker to a highly qualified specialist.

THE PRICE OF BREAKING BRITAIN

Could the pursuit of national independence leave the British Isles—and Europe—less secure?

OPINION: Stuart Robinson

This article explores a hypothetical scenario set in 2035. It is an opinion piece, not a prediction of events.

Imagine the year is 2035. The United States has withdrawn from NATO, Russia has seized further Ukrainian territory, and Europe is struggling to defend itself without the military power upon which it relied for generations.

The Golubenko Readings Scientific Conference dedicated to the legacy of Dr Lidiya Golubenko

A great woman leaves more than achievements behind — she leaves a legacy strong enough to inspire the next generation to continue what she began. In 2026, this idea took on a powerful new form when Dr Natalia Golubenko, daughter of the distinguished scholar and public leader Dr Lidiya Golubenko, established a series of academic conferences known as the Golubenko Readings in honour of her mother’s memory, scientific contribution and public service.

Dr Lidiya Golubenko was a renowned Doctor of Sciences, Head of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology at Odesa I. I. Mechnikov National University, a politician, public figure and the first President of the International Club of Successful Women — WORLD WOMAN CLUB. Her life and work united academia, international cooperation and women’s leadership, and the new initiative created by her daughter demonstrates one of the most meaningful forms of continuity: when a mother’s ideas and values continue to grow through the next generation.

BREXIT 2.0: Is the United Kingdom Breaking Apart?

Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish nationalist leaders sign a landmark memorandum asserting their nations’ right to self-determination

The constitutional future of the United Kingdom has entered a new and potentially decisive phase. At a landmark meeting in Cardiff, leading representatives of the Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru and Sinn Féin signed a memorandum affirming the right of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to determine their own political futures through democratic processes.

The document calls upon the British Government to recognise the principle of self-determination and to prepare for the possibility of profound constitutional change. Its signatories argue that no government in Westminster should be entitled to prevent the people of the three nations from expressing their will in legitimate referendums.

The agreement represents an unprecedented act of political coordination among the principal nationalist movements of the United Kingdom. It is also a powerful symbolic challenge to the authority of Westminster, demonstrating that constitutional dissatisfaction is no longer confined to one part of the country.
